Our palm PC phone for HTC created the first PDA phone of its kind. Evolving from a unique relationship between the Asian manufacturer and our design firm, cutting edge technology was quickly brought to the market by way of sublime, user-centric design.
The major challenge for the design of the product was to create powerful design that would connect the spirit of mobile computing with today’s mobile phones and wireless email for a product fit for the international market.
Our research on the convergence of wireless devices indicated there were two groups of users: phone-centric and PDA-centric. This T-Mobile Pocket PC is designed for the mobile professional who prefers the PDA-centric phone. International research showed that the UI and ergonomics of PDA’s and cell phones was very similar across different cultures. Our strategy was to choose a large full-color screen and an integrated antenna to create an icon that truly captured the integrated mobile technology for the global audience.
This design enabled HTC to form partnerships with international service providers such as Seimans, AT&T, and T-Mobile, and showed the growing strength Asian manufacturers command with their ability to influence design and provide important speed to market for innovative new products. The PDA phone runs Word, Excel, IM and of course- it makes call too.
