The “Rethinking Bamboo” exhibition was held in Beijing between September 26th and October 17th, 2011 as one of the five key events for the First Annual Beijing International Design Triennial. Both an international and Chinese curator coordinated to present each event under the general theme of ‘good design’.

The “Bamboo Chair” was designed by Eric Chan and Herman Miller to demonstrate bamboo’s ability to provide a comfortable experience while maintaining its aesthetic quality. The exhibition also successfully showcased China’s high level of design appreciation while also respecting uniquely original Asian material and its value.

The exhibition also highlighted unconventional uses for bamboo’s unique material characteristics. For example, bamboo is known as a sustainable material, but also has structural properties used for furniture and architectural work. The exhibition also presented a broad range of products and objects including clothing, bicycles, automobiles and handbags.

Trudeau Stressless Pizza Wheel

We started by going out to our favorite local pizza places to interview the guys who sell hundreds of pizza slices a day to hungry New Yorkers, and watch how they used their slicers. We recognized that there are multiple hand positions that must be considered, so we designed a multi-position grip that gives the user the flexibility to choose the optimal position for their own preference. In each case, the grip design gives the user good mechanical advantage and also protects their hand from the pizza wheel itself.

Trudeau Stressless Garlic Press

Most so called “garlic presses” are really garlic “squeezers” because they rely entirely on the user’s grip strength to push the clove of garlic through a grid of holes. The Trudeau Stressless garlic press can be used in that traditional manner, but also is equipped with integral rubber feet designed to be placed against the cutting board for increased mechanical advantage with less fatigue. The shape of the handle allows the user to press the device against the work surface using strength from the arm, not the fingers, and without harming the user’s knuckles or the work surface in the process.

Trudeau Stressless Cheese Grater

The Trudeau Stressless Cheese Grater allows the home chef to shred or grate cheese directly onto a dish being prepared with very low effort and a high level of control. The grater is also easy to disassemble for cleaning and can be quickly reconfigured in a matter of seconds for right or left-handed users. Cheese is held in the device thanks to a spring-loaded flap, so the user does not need to grip the device hard to achieve results, and the cheese being grated is less likely to accidentally drop out of the device when the user puts it down on the work surface.

Trudeau Stressless Can Opener

The Trudeau Stressless Can Opener is designed to allow the home chef unparalleled ease of use and convenience in opening metal cans. The Stressless Can Opener replaces the stubby twist knob with a long polished metal handle, allowing superior leverage when opening the can, and a continuous, low effort motion that derives strength from the user’s arm, rather than their fingers. The lever arm also folds neatly into the unit for a slim, drawer-friendly profile when stored.

Canon U.S. Life Science Genetic Analyzer – CULS Genetic Analyzer from Canon U.S. Life Science offers ultra high speed genetic analysis of patients’ DNA samples, in a relatively compact desk-top machine format.

Inside the machine is Canon’s CMOS sensor, used in Canon’s consumer digital cameras and other imaging devices. The CMOS is an image sensor that converts an optical image to an electric signal. Also employed in the Analyzer is Canon’s proprietary Ink Jet heater technology with running droplet in-line PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) which uses micro fluidic technology. The use of these two technologies allows a fully automated diagnosis in a single machine, with fewer steps and less opportunity for operator error.

The clean, furniture-like exterior design allows the product to be integrated into any lab environment. It is easy to clean and maintain, and it’s far smaller than competitor units, making placement easier for technicians. A seamless integration between automated sample tray and touch screen UI make the lab technician’s work flow comfortable and effortless.
